Jon G Sutinen is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, University of Rhode Island. During his 35 years at URI, Dr Sutinen served as President of the North American Association of Fisheries Economists; Chair of the National Research Council Committee on Defining Best Available Science, Co-chair of the Social Science Advisory Committee of the New England Fisheries Management Council; and a member of the Ocean Studies Board. Dr. Sutinen was the founding editor of the journal Marine Resource Economics and served in that role for over a decade.
Outdoor activities have always been a part of his life, from hiking and fishing along the banks of the Columbia River in SW Washington, where he was born, to fly fishing in Maine, New Zealand and Iceland. He took up tennis in his forties, learning from a former NCAA tennis All American who was a graduate student at the time. Jon traveled the world as part of his job, always taking his racquet and tennis shoes – playing in such far-flung locations as Monte Carlo, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan and elsewhere. Tennis has provided a way to meet people and make new friends anywhere in the world.
After retiring from URI in 2007 he has devoted more time to tennis, one of his life’s passions. He has played on and served as captain of USTA league teams in El Cerrito, San Rafael, and Richmond. In addition to playing tennis, Jon attends tennis instructional workshops and offers clinics to adult beginners in the Richmond, CA, area.
