I was born in Berkeley, and have lived in the Bay Area my entire life. I attended Saint Mary's College High School in Berkeley, where I first fell in love with tennis. I attended UC Berkeley, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, graduating in 1978. I received an MBA from Cal State Hayward in 1983. I worked as a Real Estate Broker for K & S Management for twenty years. In 1998 I shifted careers, and went into teaching. I taught grammar school for two years in Pinole, and then the last twenty-two years at my alma mater, Saint Mary's College High School. I taught various levels of math for fifteen years, and then religion for the past seven. I retired this past June.
I married in 1979, recently celebrating our 43rd anniversary. My wife works for Mariner Investments in Emeryville, and is planning on retiring at the end of this year. We have two children, Karen age 39 and Kevin age 37. Both are married. Karen and her husband have two kids, while my son and his wife have one.
I began coaching while in college. I coached basketball, baseball, and softball teams for the CYO at the School of the Madeleine for about 15 years. I coached both boys and girls, and eventually became the volunteer athletic director. I coached my son's little league teams, and when I began teaching at Saint Mary's, I coached at the high school level. During my time at Saint Mary's I have coached both boy's and girl's tennis, girl's softball, and girl's basketball. I also ran the school service program.
While living in El Cerrito, I served on the Parks and Recreation Board for about four years.
I have played tennis since I was 12, but began to take it seriously in high school. I played with friends for a number of years, but took a break from tennis while raising our kids. I got back into tennis about twenty-five years ago joining the USTA. I have played for teams in Albany, El Cerrito, Lafayette, Orinda, Pinole, and now finally Richmond. Tennis has given me so much joy. I have met so many wonderful people, and coached so many great students. I hope to continue playing tennis into my later years.
